The Myth of the Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies by Bryan Caplan

Bryan Caplan | Princeton University Press | 2007-04-16 | ISBN: 0691129428 | 280 pages | PDF | 2.4 MB

The greatest obstacle to sound economic policy is not entrenched special interests or rampant lobbying, but the popular misconceptions, irrational beliefs, and personal biases held by ordinary voters. This is economist Bryan Caplan's sobering assessment in this provocative and eye-opening book. Caplan argues that voters continually elect politicians who either share their biases or else pretend to, resulting in bad policies winning again and again by popular demand.

Boldly calling into question our most basic assumptions about American politics, Caplan contends that democracy fails precisely because it does what voters want. Through an analysis of Americans' voting behavior and opinions on a range of economic issues, he makes the convincing case that noneconomists suffer from four prevailing biases: they underestimate the wisdom of the market mechanism, distrust foreigners, undervalue the benefits of conserving labor, and pessimistically believe the economy is going from bad to worse. Caplan lays out several bold ways to make democratic government work better--for example, urging economic educators to focus on correcting popular misconceptions and recommending that democracies do less and let markets take up the slack.

The Myth of the Rational Voter takes an unflinching look at how people who vote under the influence of false beliefs ultimately end up with government that delivers lousy results. With the upcoming presidential election season drawing nearer, this thought-provoking book is sure to spark a long-overdue reappraisal of our elective system.

The 80/20 Principle: The Secret to Success by Achieving More with Less by Richard Koch

Richard Koch | Currency | 1999-10-19 | ISBN: 0385491743 | 288 pages | PDF | 1.1 MB

In 1897, Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, in his study of the patterns of wealth and income, observed that the distribution of wealth was predictably unbalanced. He first discovered this pattern in 19th-century England and found it to be the same for every country and time period he studied. Over the years, Pareto's observation has become known as the 80/20 principle.

Now in 1998, Richard Koch takes a fresh look at the 80/20 principle and finds that the basic imbalance observed by Pareto 100 years ago can be found in almost every aspect of modern life. Whether you're investing in stocks, analyzing company sales, or looking at the performance of a Web site, you'll find that it's usually 20 percent that produces 80 percent of the total result. This means 80 percent of what you do may not count for much. Koch helps you to identify that 20 percent and shows you how you can get more out of your business, and life, for less.

The Competitive Advantage of Corporate Philanthropy by Michael E. Porter and Mark R. Kramer

"The Competitive Advantage of Corporate Philanthropy"
Michael E. Porter and Mark R. Kramer
Harvard Business Review, December 2002 | English | PDF | 3.17MB

When it comes to philanthropy, executives increasingly see themselves as caught between critics demanding ever higher levels of "corporate social responsibility" and investors applying pressure to maximize short-term profits. Increasingly, philanthropy is used as a form of public relations or advertising, promoting a company's image through high-profile sponsorships. But there is a more truly strategic way to think about philanthropy. Corporations can use their charitable efforts to improve their competitive context--the quality of the business environment in the locations where they operate. Using philanthropy to enhance competitive context aligns social and economic goals and improves a company's long-term business prospects. Addressing context enables a company not only to give money but also leverage its capabilities and relationships in support of charitable causes. Taking this new direction requires fundamental changes in the way companies approach their contribution programs. Adopting a context-focused approach requires a far more disciplined approach than is prevalent today. But it can make a company's philanthropic activities far more effective.

Rich Dad's Guide to Investing: What the Rich Invest in That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not! by Robert T. Kiyosaki, Sharon L. Lechter

Robert T. Kiyosaki, Sharon L. Lechter | Time Warner Books (June 2000) | English | 403 Pages | ISBN-10: 0446677469 # ISBN-13: 978-0446677462 | PDF | 2.3MB

The rich are different from the rest of us, if for no other reason than U.S. tax and securities laws allow them to invest in ways that keep us from catching up to them. That's why 90 percent of all corporate shares of stock are owned by 10 percent of the people. Kiyosaki believes it's possible for anyone to move up into that 10 percent, but it takes a different view of investing than most people have: it takes a plan to be a successful investor. And a plan is more than simply buying and selling, or collecting "assets" that bring in no cash and are thus more akin to liabilities. The way most people invest, "they might as well be pushing a wheelbarrow in a circle," he writes.

A plan is "mechanical, automatic, and boring," a formula for success that has worked historically for most of those who've used it. Kiyosaki's "rich dad" (actually, the father of his best friend) tells him the simplest analogy is the game Monopoly: buy four green houses, trade them for one red hotel, and repeat until you become rich. The overall message of Rich Dad's Guide to Investing is that this is an abundant world, full of opportunity for the sophisticated investor. However, it sometimes takes a while to find this point. Much of the book is told in dialogues between young Kiyosaki and his rich dad, and these conversations can ramble.

There are rewards for the careful reader--for example, in the middle of a section on the basic rules of investing, Kiyosaki's rich dad compares investor education to toilet training: difficult at first but eventually automatic. But getting to these inspired metaphors means wading through a lot of repetitive dialogue. It's a bit ironic that someone who advocates investor discipline should show so little as a writer. But by the end of the book, even the rambling starts to make sense. By the hundredth time you read that the rich don't work for money, and that you don't need money to make money, both concepts start to make sense. It still looks difficult to apply these ideas, but Rich Dad's Guide to Investing certainly makes the case that they'll work for anyone bold and smart enough to practice them.

Applied Macroeconometrics by Carlo A. Favero

Carlo A. Favero | Oxford University Press, USA (March 22, 2001) | English | 296 Pages | ISBN-10: 0198296851 # ISBN-13: 978-0198296850 | PDF | 2MB

Until the 1970s, there was a consensus in applied macroeconometrics, both regarding the theoretical foundation and the empirical specification of macroeconometric modelling, commonly known as the Cowles Commission approach. This is no longer the case: the Cowles Commission approach broke down in the 1970s, replaced by three prominent competing methods of empirical research: the LSE (London School of Economics) approach, the VAR approach, and the intertemporal optimization/Real Business Cycle approach. This book discusses and illustrates the empirical research strategy of these three alternative approaches by interpreting them as different proposals to solve problems observed in the Cowles Commission approach.

Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, 1st Marquis of Púbol (May 11, 1904 – January 23, 1989), was a Spanish surrealist painter born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. Dalí was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. His painterly skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters. His best known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in 1931. Salvador Dalí's artistic repertoire also included film, sculpture, and photography. He collaborated with Walt Disney on the Academy Award-nominated short cartoon Destino, which was released posthumously in 2003. He also collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock on Hitchcock's film Spellbound.

Dalí insisted on his "Arab lineage", claiming that his ancestors were descended from the Moors who occupied Southern Spain for nearly 800 years (711-1492), and attributed to these origins, "my love of everything that is gilded and excessive, my passion for luxury and my love of oriental clothes."

Widely considered to be greatly imaginative, Dalí had an affinity for doing unusual things to draw attention to himself. This sometimes irked those who loved his art as much as it annoyed his critics, since his eccentric manner sometimes drew more public attention than his artwork. The purposefully-sought notoriety led to broad public recognition and many purchases of his works by people from all walks of life.

The Secret History of the American Empire: Economic Hit Men, Jackals, and the Truth about Global Corruption by John Perkins

John Perkins | Dutton Adult (June 5, 2007) | Language: English | 384 Pages | ISBN-10: 052595015X # ISBN-13: 978-0525950158 | PDF | 1.03MB

Having made a splash with Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, Perkins offers similarly entertaining but disturbing accounts of the American government wreaking havoc around the world in support of American business. In Perkins's view, American presidents willingly comply with their CEO masters, distributing foreign aid to corrupt Third World leaders who keep a share and return the rest to U.S. business for major projects, leaving their nations poor and massively in debt, and requiring more loans and slavish obedience to U.S. policy. If any leader objects, the CIA destabilizes his government, by assassination if necessary. Gathering evidence is not Perkins's strong suit. Typically, a shadowy figure pulls him aside, insists on anonymity, then reveals all. Critics will rightfully accuse Perkins of dreadful journalism and a taste for conspiracy theories. Yet economists admit that loans and "expert advice" to poor nations are often harmful. Few deny that America has ruthlessly undermined uncooperative governments and supported dictators including Saddam Hussein. Perkins's assertions that the U.S. assassinated Ecuador's reformist president and connived at genocide in Timor and Sudan are not absurd, merely unproven. This book's greatest value may be to encourage a competent journalist to cover the same ground.

Out of these real-time experiences, he shares the valuable insights you will find in A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics. Novice and experienced alike will gain a better understanding of the mechanics of the markets and methodologies that work.

Person demonstrates multiple trading methodologies using pivot point analysis and shows you how you can implement these key calculations with other methods and indicators. To understand this approach, you don’t have to abandon your knowledge of traditional technical analysis techniques. All you have to do is be open to integrating the theories to help you confirm, validate, and identify entry and exit points when trading.

By learning how to better integrate elements of market analysis such as time and price, you’ll be ready to trade with confidence and achieve success. The proven methodologies that are discussed from the technical side include:

  • Pivot points–a leading price indicator that is based on price points using different time frames
  • Cycle analysis–which deals with predicting market turning points based on time
  • Candle chart patterns–which are based on price relationships between the open, high, low, and close including past chart points such as old highs or lows
  • Fibonacci ratio corrections and extension studies–which are based on past price points
  • Mental thought processes–the last and maybe the most important aspect of trading, which will help you evaluate your psychological makeup and overcomerough spots to stay focused when trading
If you are to trade successfully, you need to understand that it requires hard work, discipline, and, above all, that you remain focused with the use of methodologies that pinpoint opportunities and help you take control of your emotions. A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics will go a long way toward accomplishing these goals.

The Complete TurtleTrader: The Legend, the Lessons, the Results by Michael W. Covel

Michael W. Covel | Collins (October 9, 2007) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 0061241709 # ISBN-13: 978-0061241703 | PDF | 2.68MB

Covel (Trend Following) revisits a famous financial trading experiment conducted by Wall Street trader Richard Dennis and extracts its lessons with mixed results. Dennis, who quickly learned how to trade after starting as a runner at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1966 at age 17, had made a reported $200 million by 1983. To settle an argument with fellow trader William Eckhardt about whether trading ability was innate or could be taught, he put an ad in the Wall Street Journal offering to teach candidates how to trade in two weeks, and then backed them with his own money. Of the thousands of people who who applied, 23 turtles were accepted. Their trading made $100 million for Dennis, leading some to become highly successful traders in their own right. Having tracked down most of the people involved, Covel describes the turtle training, including rules for entering and exiting trades as well as Dennis and Eckhardt's personal lessons, and speculates on why some turtles succeeded more than others. However, there are too many characters with competing interests, and many missing facts. Covel's own strong views can also get more emphasis than the voices of the principals. Still, the book is a useful training manual distilling the lessons of a fascinating experiment.

Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: The Classic Guide to Understanding the Opposite Sex by John Gray

John Gray | Harper Paperbacks (January 6, 2004) | English | 368 Pages | ISBN-10: 0060574216 ISBN-13: 978-0060574215 | PDF + Audio | 392KB + 87MB

Relationship counselor John Gray focuses on the differences between men and women--men are from Mars, and women are from Venus, after all--and offers a simple solution: couples must acknowledge and accept these differences before they can develop happier relationships. In this unabridged version, Gray gives a spirited delivery of his message, especially when role-playing typical male/female interactions. Although it takes some time to adjust to his slightly nasal tone, the information is sound and gives both men and women helpful hints on improving themselves and their union.

Psychotherapist Gray ( What You Feel You Can Heal ) adds to the growing number of self-help books that assess marital and relationship problems in terms of distinct and pervasive gender differences. Unfortunately, his overuse of gimmicky, often silly analogies and metaphors makes his otherwise down-to-earth guide hard to take seriously. Here Martians (men) play Mr. Fix-It while Venusians (women) run the Home-Improvement Committee; when upset, Martians "go to their caves" (to sort things out alone) while Venusians "go to the well" (for emotional cleansing). While graphically illustrative, the hyperbolic, overextended comparisons, particularly in the chapters that refer to men as rubber bands and women as waves, significantly detract from Gray's realistic insights.

From the basics to the complex, Nassar reveals what you need to make it as an independent trader and investor, including:

  • The discipline of foundational analysis, a proprietary method that holds that only a few key variables—price, volume, time, and velocity—are needed to fully comprehend the essence of stock (options and futures) price fluctuations
  • Chart patterns that measure market psychology—that few people ever see
  • Proven proprietary indicators—using the MarketWise "Profiler" techniques, scanning the market for "honest" trends will immediately highlight your trading while also eliminating market noise

Angels & Demons: A Novel by Dan Brown

Dan Brown | # Atria; 1st Atria Books Hardcover Ed edition (July 1, 2003) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 0743486226 | PDF | 721KB

It takes guts to write a novel that combines an ancient secret brotherhood, the Swiss Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, a papal conclave, mysterious ambigrams, a plot against the Vatican, a mad scientist in a wheelchair, particles of antimatter, jets that can travel 15,000 miles per hour, crafty assassins, a beautiful Italian physicist, and a Harvard professor of religious iconology. It takes talent to make that novel anything but ridiculous. Kudos to Dan Brown (Digital Fortress) for achieving the nearly impossible. Angels & Demons is a no-holds-barred, pull-out-all-the-stops, breathless tangle of a thriller--think Katherine Neville's The Eight (but cleverer) or Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum (but more accessible).

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is shocked to find proof that the legendary secret society, the Illuminati--dedicated since the time of Galileo to promoting the interests of science and condemning the blind faith of Catholicism--is alive, well, and murderously active. Brilliant physicist Leonardo Vetra has been murdered, his eyes plucked out, and the society's ancient symbol branded upon his chest. His final discovery, antimatter, the most powerful and dangerous energy source known to man, has disappeared--only to be hidden somewhere beneath Vatican City on the eve of the election of a new pope. Langdon and Vittoria, Vetra's daughter and colleague, embark on a frantic hunt through the streets, churches, and catacombs of Rome, following a 400-year-old trail to the lair of the Illuminati, to prevent the incineration of civilization.

Brown seems as much juggler as author--there are lots and lots of balls in the air in this novel, yet Brown manages to hurl the reader headlong into an almost surreal suspension of disbelief. While the reader might wish for a little more sardonic humor from Langdon, and a little less bombastic philosophizing on the eternal conflict between religion and science, these are less fatal flaws than niggling annoyances--readers should have no trouble skimming past them and immersing themselves in a heck of a good read. "Brain candy" it may be, but my! It's tasty. --Kelly Flynn --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

World Event Trading: How to Analyze and Profit from Today's Headlines by Andrew Busch

Andrew Busch | Wiley (July 20, 2007) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 0470106778 ISBN-13: 978-0470106778 | PDF | 6.70MB

"World Event Trading: How to Analyze and Profit from Today's Headlines is one of the more unique and interesting financial books that I have read in quite a while. Though often times trading books deal with the minutia of market movements, Andrew examines three types of world events: infectious diseases, natural disasters, and politics, from a historical perspective before showing how all three impact the financial markets." (-- Tom Aspray, Book of the Month Reviews, MoneyShow.com, August 2007)

Product Description
In an age of twenty-four-hour news coverage and cutting-edge technology, world events dominate our lives and impact the financial markets. From hurricanes to the war in Iraq, we exist in a crazy, connect-the-dot planet. However, the well-prepared investor can turn these events into profits.
All they need is the ability to recognize the consistent characteristics of these events and the vision to build a strategy or portfolio that can take advantage of these situations when they begin to unfold.

As a foreign exchange strategist with over twenty years of financial experience, author Andrew Busch knows what it takes to make it in today’s dynamic market. And now, with World Event Trading, he wants to show you how.

Filled with in-depth insights and expert advice, this practical guide examines three categories of world events—infectious diseases, natural disasters, and politics—and provides hands-on strategies for trading profitably on each. Using actual examples of the war in Iraq, Hurricane Katrina, and other recent "page one stories," Busch shows you how to understand all-important market moods and anticipate profitable trades. He also reveals little-known details on legendary event-driven trading successes, illustrating how any trader can repeat them in different market environments.

Andrew Busch is the Global FX Market Strategist for BMO Financial Group’s Investment Banking Division in Chicago. He is a recognized expert on the world financial markets and how these markets are impacted by political events. Busch’s views appear in his daily newsletter, the Busch Update, which reaches 5,000 investors and financial professionals. Donald A. Wilhite | CRC | ISBN-10: 0824727711 ISBN-13:978-0824727710| March 22, 2005 | 328 pages | PDF | 2.43MB

Today the world is facing a greater water crisis than ever. Droughts of lesser magnitude are resulting in greater impact. Even in years with normal precipitation, water shortages have become widespread in both developing and developed nations, in humid as well as arid climates. When faced with severe drought, governments become eager to act. Unfortunately, this eagerness usually wanes when precipitation returns to normal. Drought and Water Crises: Science, Technology, and Management Issues explains the complexities of drought and the role of science, technology, and management in resolving many of the issues associated with the world’s expanding water crises.

Contributors discuss a broad range of topics in attempting to answer these most pressing questions: How can we can improve planning tools and make mitigation tools more readily available and adaptable? How can we promote widespread adoption of new water-conserving technologies and encourage their use during non-drought periods? How can seasonal forecasts and early warning systems be made more reliable and expressed in ways to better meet the needs of end users? How can the drought-related policy experiences of some countries be systematically utilized to benefit others? Drought and Water Crises collates considerable information from diverse disciplines with the goal of reducing societal vulnerability to drought. Featuring case studies and stressing new technologies, the book seeks to encourage nations to adopt a more risk-based, proactive policy for water and drought management.

Two Minds: Intuition and Analysis in the History of Economic Thought by Roger Frantz

Roger Frantz | Springer| ISBN 0387240691 | 2004-12-15 | PDF | 178pages | 3.31 MB

The “Two Minds” noted economist Roger Frantz explores in this landmark book are, first, the analytical mind and, second, the intuitive mind. In part one he presents the leading theories on intuition, discusses recent developments in cognitive science, and borrows from such non-economist intuitors as Albert Einstein, Jonas Salk, Henri Poincare, Ludwig von Beethoven, and Robert Louis Stevenson to explore the role of intuition in science and creativity. In part two, Frantz considers the presumably analytic and logical nature of economics and then demonstrates the many ways in which economists from Adam Smith to Herbert Simon have relied on intuition as a fruitful mental activity. This book provides a rich complement and alternative perspective to some of the theoretical and mathematical models that have dominated the dismal science since the late 1940s.

Recent Financial Crises: Analysis, Challenges and Implications by L. R. Klein , Tayyeb Shabbir

L. R. Klein , Tayyeb Shabbir | Edward Elgar Pub (February 7, 2007) | ISBN: 1843766426 | 344 pages | PDF | 1.3 Mb

Financial crises are recurring phenomena that can cause significant economic and societal loss. This book is therefore vitally important as it analyzes why and how financial crises occur, the extent of their impact, and what can be done to prevent their recurrence or reduce the damage they cause. Comprising original and never-before-published papers by distinguished economists, this book offers insights about lessons that were or should have been learned from recent outbreaks of such crises in East Asia and elsewhere. Recent Financial Crises also presents a set of econometric studies of issues such as labor market behavior, investment and productivity, and exchange rate adjustments. Although China did not have a crisis, its economic behavior was closely monitored in order to see if that had any effect on the crisis conditions. In this respect, the book contains an estimation of China’s `core’ inflation rate, as well as its `true’ cost of living index, over a 20-year period spanning the Asian financial crisis. In general, collectively, the studies point to a need for ongoing structural reforms to minimize vulnerability to crises or soften their impact. The necessity for resorting to viable safety nets is also stressed. Policymakers and central bankers will find this book of great value, as will scholars and researchers at many levels of academe, involved in financial, business, and international economics.

Digital Fortress : A Thriller by Dan Brown

Dan Brown | Publisher: Unknown (May 5, 2000) | ISBN-10: 0312263120 | PDF | 1.15MB

In most thrillers, "hardware" consists of big guns, airplanes, military vehicles, and weapons that make things explode. Dan Brown has written a thriller for those of us who like our hardware with disc drives and who rate our heroes by big brainpower rather than big firepower. It's an Internet user's spy novel where the good guys and bad guys struggle over secrets somewhat more intellectual than just where the secret formula is hidden--they have to gain understanding of what the secret formula actually is.

In this case, the secret formula is a new means of encryption, capable of changing the balance of international power. Part of the fun is that the book takes the reader along into an understanding of encryption technologies. You'll find yourself better understanding the political battles over such real-life technologies as the Clipper Chip and PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) software even though the book looks at the issues through the eyes of fiction.

Although there's enough globehopping in this book for James Bond, the real battleground is cyberspace, because that's where the "bomb" (or rather, the new encryption algorithm) will explode. Yes, there are a few flaws in the plot if you look too closely, but the cleverness and the sheer fun of it all more than make up for them. There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and a lot of high, gee-whiz-level information about encryption, code breaking, and the role they play in international politics. Set aside the whole afternoon and evening for it and have finger food on hand for supper--you may want to read this one straight through. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Who’s Afraid of Adam Smith? How the Market Got Its Soul by Peter J. Dougherty

Peter J. Dougherty | Wiley | 240 pages | 2002 | ISBN: 0471184772 | PDF | 814 KB

“Peter Dougherty does the near-impossible in this brilliant book . . . [he] makes economics engaging and accessible.” –Professor Larry J. Sabato, University of Virginia
In this spirited and timely book, Peter Dougherty shows how economists are drawing on Adam Smith’s civic writings to illuminate how the market creates not only fiscal capital, but “social capital.” Dougherty demonstrates how Smith’s ideas are currently experiencing a renaissance. He then explores several impressive initiatives to demonstrate what today’s theoretical and practicing economists are accomplishing in the spirit of Adam Smith’s moral sentiments: the institutional reform of transitional and developing economies; the financing of new technological, medical, and educational initiatives; and the economic revival of cities. Capitalism pervades every aspect of our daily life. Peter Dougherty now offers a fascinating peek at its hidden soul.

The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

Dan Brown | Doubleday; 1st ed edition (March 18, 2003) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 0385504209 # ISBN-13: 978-0385504201 | PDF | 1.4MB

With The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown masterfully concocts an intelligent and lucid thriller that marries the gusto of an international murder mystery with a collection of fascinating esoteria culled from 2,000 years of Western history.

A murder in the silent after-hour halls of the Louvre museum reveals a sinister plot to uncover a secret that has been protected by a clandestine society since the days of Christ. The victim is a high-ranking agent of this ancient society who, in the moments before his death, manages to leave gruesome clues at the scene that only his granddaughter, noted cryptographer Sophie Neveu, and Robert Langdon, a famed symbologist, can untangle. The duo become both suspects and detectives searching for not only Neveu's grandfather's murderer but also the stunning secret of the ages he was charged to protect. Mere steps ahead of the authorities and the deadly competition, the mystery leads Neveu and Langdon on a breathless flight through France, England, and history itself. Brown (Angels and Demons) has created a page-turning thriller that also provides an amazing interpretation of Western history. Brown's hero and heroine embark on a lofty and intriguing exploration of some of Western culture's greatest mysteries--from the nature of the Mona Lisa's smile to the secret of the Holy Grail. Though some will quibble with the veracity of Brown's conjectures, therein lies the fun. The Da Vinci Code is an enthralling read that provides rich food for thought. --Jeremy Pugh

Ten Years After: Revisiting The Asian Financial Crisis by Bhumika Muchhala

Bhumika Muchhala | Woodrow Wilson International | October 2007 | ISBN 1933549246 | English | 70 pages | PDF | 1.2 MB

This volume seeks to revisit critical debates on the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis by reexamining its symptoms and causes, as well as lessons from its aftermath. The publication also addresses fundamental issues such as financial liberalization and impacts on regional economic change. Edited by Bhumika Muchhala.

The Asian financial crisis of 1997-98 is now seen as one of the most significant economic events in recent world history. The crisis began in early July 1997, when the Thai baht was floated, and spread into a virulent contagion—leaping from Thailand to South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. It led to severe currency depreciations and an economic recession that threatened to erase decades of economic progress for the affected East and Southeast Asian nations.

The sequence of events triggered a self-reinforcing spiral of panic, which many analysts argue was premised on a confluence of the inherent volatility of financial globalization and the weak domestic financial systems in East Asia. Financial liberalization in the region led to surges in capital flows to domestic banks and firms, which expanded bank lending, ultimately resulting in a rapid accumulation of foreign debt that exceeded the value of foreign exchange reserves. As international speculation on dwindling foreign reserves mounted, the regional currencies came under attack.

The Little Book That Builds Wealth: The Knockout Formula for Finding Great Investments by Pat Dorsey

Pat Dorsey | Wiley (March 3, 2008) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 047022651X ISBN-13: 978-0470226513 | PDF | 780KB

"A detailed exploration of Warren Buffet's "wide economic moat" concept - how to find companies with a true in-built competitive advantage." (Financial Times, Tues 26th February)

Product Description
To make money in today's dynamic market environment, you need to invest in companies that will perform in the face of sustained competitive pressure. But how can you accurately identify companies that are great today and likely to remain great for many years to come?

The answer to this question lies in competitive advantages, or economic moats. Just as moats were dug around medieval castles to keep the opposition at bay, economic moats protect the high returns on capital enjoyed by the world’s best companies. If you can identify companies that have moats, and you can purchase their shares at reasonable prices, you’ll begin to build a portfolio of solid businesses that will improve your odds of doing well in the stock market.

In The Little Book That Builds Wealth, author Pat Dorsey—the Director of Equity Research for leading independent investment research provider Morningstar, Inc.—outlines this proven approach and reveals how you can effectively apply it to your own investments. Step by step, Dorsey discusses why economic moats are such strong indicators of great long-term investments and examines four of their most common sources: intangible assets, cost advantages, customer-switching costs, and network economics. After establishing a firm understanding of moats, Dorsey shows you how to recognize moats that are eroding, the key role that industry structure plays in creating competitive advantage, and how management can create (as well as destroy) moats.

Along the way, Dorsey provides an informative overview of valuation—because even a wide-moat company will be a poor investment if you pay too much for its shares—and illustrates the issues addressed through case studies that apply competitive analysis to some well-known companies.

Although the moat concept is not a new one—it was made famous by Warren Buffett—the modern-day investor can benefit from what it has to offer. With The Little Book That Builds Wealth as your guide, you’ll quickly discover why moats should be an integral part of your analytical investment toolkit and learn how to leverage this approach to build a portfolio of high-performance stocks.

Pat Dorsey, CFA (Chicago, IL) is Director of Equity Research at Morningstar, Inc. He played an integral part in the development of the Morningstar Rating™ for stocks, as well as Morningstar’s economic moat ratings. Dorsey is also the author of The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing: Morningstar's Guide to Building Wealth and Winning in the Market (Wiley). He holds a master’s degree in political science from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in government from Wesleyan University. Please visit www.findingmoats.com.

Untapped Riches: Never Pay Off Your Mortgage--and Other Surprising Secrets for Building Wealth by Susan Cutaia, Anthony Cutaia , Robert Slater

Susan Cutaia, Anthony Cutaia , Robert Slater | AMACOM/American Management Association (December 31, 2006) | ISBN: 0814473962 | 223 pages | PDF | 1.1 Mb

Why do some folks get rich while others just get by? The biggest stumbling block for most people is believing they lack the capital required for serious wealth-building. Untapped Riches dispels this myth. This remarkable book reveals that most homeowners are in fact sitting on "untapped riches." Working diligently to pay down mortgages, they are unwittingly tying up money in equity they could be investing elsewhere for greater return. Offering 40 wealth-building and wealth-protection strategies, many of which fly in the face of conventional wisdom, Untapped Riches will change how readers think about borrowing money, investing, and mortgages. Challenging the idea that it is more financially sound to be debt-free, the authors believe that there is both good and bad debt -- and that the former is essential to generating cash flow and building significant wealth. Real estate tycoons know it’s all about leverage. Now, the authors, who made their own fortune in real estate, show how anyone can get the cash they need, and really put it to work.

"Like most people, you've probably dreamt about making smart investments that would eventually allow you to do things like take one extra vacation a year…or own a nicer home…or even just rest a little more comfortably knowing that there's money in the bank. Maybe you even have a specific investment opportunity you'd like to take advantage of and know would pay off…but don't have the cash at your disposal to even get started.

Now you can stop being frustrated, because if you own a home, you're sitting on usable equity you didn't even know you had! Untapped Riches is an eye-opening book that dispels longstanding myths and misconceptions about financial health, showing you that there is both good and bad debt, and that the key to building wealth is leveraging the capital you already have…money that would otherwise be tied up, giving you significantly less return than you could otherwise acquire by making smart investment decisions.

Untapped Riches shows you how to use new mortgage instruments and flexible loans, with sound information on ""smart loans,"" interest-only mortgages, 1031 exchanges, and negative amortization. The book proves that you don't need a raise, a second job, or a get-rich-quick scheme to increase your net worth. You already have everything you need right now. This book provides you with 40 wealth-building and wealth-protection strategies you can use immediately to achieve your financial goals.

Flying in the face of conventional wisdom -- and backing it up with proven techniques and hard-won wisdom -- Untapped Riches will change the way you think about money, mortgages, and investing, and help you get the cash you need, and really put it to work."

Great Physicists: The Life and Times of Leading Physicists from Galileo to Hawking by William H. Cropper

William H. Cropper | Oxford University Press, USA (September 16, 2004) | English | # ISBN-10: 0195173244 # ISBN-13: 978-0195173246 | PDF | 6.91MB

Although genuine understanding of physical principles eludes the mathematically challenged, that has scarcely dented the popularity of biographies of physicists or their often best-selling general-interest works. Market-savvy publishers merely request that the math be confined to iconic equations, an f=ma here, an e=mc2 there. But Cropper has obviously won any arguments on that score in this work profiling 30 scientists; although he incorporates nothing beyond the ken of high-school calculus students, the chapter on Paul Dirac is titled "i[greek characters]=m[greek characters]." That equation describes the behavior of the electron, and in the late 1920s it reconciled competing interpretations of the spooky quantum world: Heisenberg's matrix mechanics and Schrodinger's wave mechanics. Since this equation immortalized Dirac, it is high time to let it out of textbooks and into general circulation. Fear not that Cropper stands merely at the blackboard in this work; his reworking of the abundant extant biographical material enhances the appeal of his book for reflective science students.

Newton: A Very Short Introduction by Robert Iliffe

Robert Iliffe | Oxford University Press, USA (March 5, 2007) | English | ISBN-10: 0199298033 | ISBN-13: 978-0199298037 | PDF |

Newton's reputation was the subject of intense debate long before his death in 1727. While alive, numerous opponents sought to topple his theories, and his views on religion were considered by many to be unorthodox. For the vast majority of scholars, however, his groundbreaking approach to science overrode all else.

This book makes use of previously unpublished private writings and manuscript sources to present a concise exploration of the internal springs of Newton's complex character. Robert Iliffe describes Newton's studies in fields ranging from alchemy, physics, and mathematics, as well as his controversial religious beliefs, and concludes with a consideration of the legacy left after his demise. Newton will gratify readers who are interested in the real history behind one of the world's most legendary scientists.

Women in Business by David Evans & Andy Hopkins

David Evans & Andy Hopkins | Pearson ESL; 1st edition (January 11, 2002) | English | # ISBN-10: 0582453275 # ISBN-13: 978-0582453272 | PDF | 2.69MB

Some people are discussing the company’s financial performance or its latest sales figures. But others are discussing campaigns to save the forests of Brazil or ways of helping political prisoners . . .

This building is the head office of The Body Shop, a company which was started by one woman, Anita Roddick, in 1976. In just a few years, her company has grown from one small shop into a large international business. During this time, she has shown people that business is not just about making money; she believes that business can help to make the world a better place.

For years, working women found they had little chance of getting a top job. The bosses of big business were nearly always men. They were often good at managing money but bad at managing people. Most of them were good at selling traditional products but bad at creating new ones. Many of them thought in the same way, said the same kinds of things and wore the same dark suits.

But in recent years, business has changed. There are now opportunities for people to think differently and to manage
companies in new ways. At last, women have been able to test new ideas and try new ways of working. Although many women still have problems in the workplace, more and more are reaching the top in their business lives.

This book tells the stories of five women from very different ackgrounds who have reached the top in very different ways.
They have all succeeded by using their special skills to create ompletely new kinds of companies.

Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler

Adolf Hitler | Houghton Mifflin (September 15, 1998) | English | # ISBN-10: 0395951054 # ISBN-13: 978-0395951057 | PDF | 864KB

The angry ranting of an obscure, small-party politician, the first volume of Mein Kampf was virtually ignored when it was originally published in 1925. Likewise the second volume, which appeared in 1926. The book details Hitler’s childhood, the “betrayal” of Germany in World War I, the desire for revenge against France, the need for lebensraum for the German people, and the means by which the National Socialist party can gain power. It also includes Hitler’s racist agenda and his glorification of the “Aryan” race. The few outside the Nazi party who read it dismissed it as nonsense, not believing that anyone could–or would–carry out its radical, terrorist programs.

As Hitler and the Nazis gained power, first party members and then the general public were pressured to buy the book. By the time Hitler became chancellor of the Third Reich in 1933, the book stood atop the German bestseller lists. Had the book been taken seriously when it was first published, perhaps the 20th century would have been very different. Beyond the anger, hatred, bigotry, and self-aggrandizing, Mein Kampf is saddled with tortured prose, meandering narrative, and tangled metaphors (one person was described as “a thorn in the eyes of venal officials”). That said, it is an incredibly important book. It is foolish to think that the Holocaust could not happen again, especially if World War II and its horrors are forgotten.

As a reader has pointed out, “If you want to learn about why the Holocaust happened, you can’t avoid reading the words of the man who was most responsible for it happening.” Mein Kampf, therefore, must be read as a reminder that evil can all too easily grow.

In 1922, just four years after the war to end all wars, an unknown Austrian then living in Bavaria planned a pamphlet to be called Settling Accounts. In it he intended to attack the ineffectiveness of the dominant political parties in Germany which were opposed to the new National Socialists (Nazis). In November 1923, Adolf Hitler was jailed for the abortive Munich Beer Hall putsch along with men willing and able to assist him with his writing. With the help of these collaborators, chief among them Rudolf Hess, the pamphlet became a book.

Settling Accounts became Mein Kampf, an unparalleled example of muddled economics and history, appalling bigotry, and an intense self-glorification of Adolf Hitler as the true founder and builder of the National Socialist movement. It was written in hate and it contained a blueprint for violent bloodshed. When Mein Kampf was published in 1925, it was a failure. In 1926 a second volume appeared - it was no more successful than the first. People either laughed at it or ignored it. They were wrong to do so. As Hitler’s power increased, pressure was put on all party members to buy the book. Gradually this pressure was extended to all elements of the German population. Soon Mein Kampf was even being passed out to newlywed couples as a gift. Ironically, and frighteningly, by the time Hitler came to power on January 30, 1933, what has been considered by many to be the most satanic book ever written was running neck and neck with the Bible at the top of the German bestseller lists.

In his excellent introduction to this definitive American translation of Mein Kampf, Konrad Heiden writes: “For years Mein Kampf stood as proof of the blindness and complacency of the world. For in its pages Hitler announced — long before he came to power — a program of blood and terror in a self-revelation of such overwhelming frankness that few among its readers had the courage to believe it … That such a man could go so far toward realizing his ambitions, and — above all — could find millions of willing tools and helpers; that is a phenomenon the world will ponder for centuries to come.” We would be wrong in thinking that such a program, such a man, and such appalling consequences could not reappear in our world of the present.

We cannot permit our selves the luxury of forgetting the tragedy of World War II or the man who, more than any other, fostered it. Mein Kampf must be read and constantly remembered as a specimen of evil demagoguery that people whenever men grow tired of thinking and acting for themselves. Mein Kampf is a blueprint for the age of chaos. It transcends in historical importance any other book of the present generation. In his translation Ralph Manheim has taken particular care to give an exact English equivalent of Hitler’s highly individual, and often awkward style, including his occasional grammatical errors.

We believe this book should stand as the complete, final, and definitive English version of Hitler’s own story of his life, his political philosophy, and his thwarted plans for world domination.

The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle

[The Power of Now Official website]

Ekhart Tolle's message is simple: living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. And while this message may not seem stunningly original or fresh, Tolle's clear writing, supportive voice, and enthusiasm make this an excellent manual for anyone who's ever wondered what exactly "living in the now" means. Foremost, Tolle is a world-class teacher, able to explain complicated concepts in concrete language. More importantly, within a chapter of reading this book, readers are already holding the world in a different container--more conscious of how thoughts and emotions get in the way of their ability to live in genuine peace and happiness.

Tolle packs a lot of information and inspirational ideas into The Power of Now. (Topics include the source of Chi, enlightened relationships, creative use of the mind, impermanence, and the cycle of life.) Thankfully, he's added markers that symbolize "break time." This is when readers should close the book and mull over what they just read. As a result, The Power of Now reads like the highly acclaimed A Course in Miracles--a spiritual guidebook that has the potential to inspire just as many study groups and change just as many lives for the better.

Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance by Barack Obama

# Author: Barack Obama # Publisher: Three Rivers Press (August 10, 2004) # Language: English # ISBN-10: 1400082773 # ISBN-13: 978-1400082773
# Format: PDF | 1.1MB

Elected the first black president of the Harvard Law Review, Obama was offered a book contract, but the intellectual journey he planned to recount became instead this poignant, probing memoir of an unusual life. Born in 1961 to a white American woman and a black Kenyan student, Obama was reared in Hawaii by his mother and her parents, his father having left for further study and a return home to Africa. So Obama's not-unhappy youth is nevertheless a lonely voyage to racial identity, tensions in school, struggling with black literature?with one month-long visit when he was 10 from his commanding father. After college, Obama became a community organizer in Chicago. He slowly found place and purpose among folks of similar hue but different memory, winning enough small victories to commit himself to the work?he's now a civil rights lawyer there. Before going to law school, he finally visited Kenya; with his father dead, he still confronted obligation and loss, and found wellsprings of love and attachment. Obama leaves some lingering questions?his mother is virtually absent?but still has written a resonant book.

What Happened: Inside The Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception by Scott Mcclellan (Audio)

Scott Mcclellan | Blackstone Audiobooks, Inc. (2008-06-02) | English | ISBN-10: 1433214342 # ISBN-13: 9781433214349 | Audio CD | 600MB

[Amazon Review]

Scott McClellan was one of a few Bush loyalists from Texas who became part of his inner circle of trusted advisers, and remained so during one of the most challenging and contentious periods of recent history. Drawn to Bush by his commitment to compassionate conservatism and strong bipartisan leadership, McClellan served the president for more than seven years, and witnessed day-to-day exactly how the presidency veered off course.

In this refreshingly clear-eyed book, written with no agenda other than to record his experiences and insights for the benefit of history, McClellan provides unique perspective on what happened and why it happened the way it did, including the Iraq war, Hurricane Katrina, Washington's bitter partisanship, and two hotly contested presidential campaigns. He gives readers a candid look into who George W. Bush is and what he believes, and into the personalities, strengths, and liabilities of his top aides. Finally, McClellan looks to the future, exploring the lessons this presidency offers the American people as we prepare to elect a new leader.

Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything by Don Tapscott, Anthony D. Williams

Don Tapscott, Anthony D. Williams | Portfolio Hardcover (December 28, 2006) | Language: English | # ISBN-10: 1591841380 # ISBN-13: 978-1591841388 | PDF | 13MB

[Amazon Review]

[Wikinomics Official Website]

The word "wiki" means "quick" in Hawaiian, and here author and think tank CEO Tapscott (The Naked Corporation), along with research director Williams, paint in vibrant colors the quickly changing world of Internet togetherness, also known as mass or global collaboration, and what those changes mean for business and technology. Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia written, compiled, edited and re-edited by "ordinary people" is the most ubiquitous example, and its history makes remarkable reading. But also considered are lesser-known success stories of global collaboration that star Procter & Gamble, BMW, Lego and a host of software and niche companies.

Problems arise when the authors indulge an outsized sense of scope-"this may be the birth of a new era, perhaps even a golden one, on par with the Italian renaissance, or the rise of Athenian democracy"-while acknowledging only reluctantly the caveats of weighty sources like Microsoft's Bill Gates. Methods for exploiting the power of collaborative production are outlined throughout, an alluring compendium of ways to throw open previously guarded intellectual property and to invite in previously unavailable ideas that hide within the populace at large. This clear and meticulously researched primer gives business leaders big leg up on mass collaboration possibilities; as such, it makes a fine next-step companion piece to James Surowiecki's 2004 bestseller The Wisdom of Crowds.

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

[The Secret Official Website]

Supporters will hail this New Age self-help book on the law of attraction as a groundbreaking and life-changing work, finding validation in its thesis that one's positive thoughts are powerful magnets that attract wealth, health, happiness... and did we mention wealth? Detractors will be appalled by this as well as when the book argues that fleeting negative thoughts are powerful enough to create terminal illness, poverty and even widespread disasters. The audio version of this controversial book, read by Byrne and contributing authors such as John Gray and Neale Donald Walsch, is uneven at best. The cheesy, obvious sound effects will not do much to add intellectual respectability to a work that has been widely denounced as pseudoscience. Mostly, this audio is hampered by its confusing and disjointed organization—techniques that worked reasonably well in the print version and the movie, such as cutting every few seconds from one enthusiastic expert to another, make for a choppy and somewhat bewildering listening experience. The gentle cadences of Rhonda Byrne's breathy, Aussie-infused voice are certainly the best part of the audio, but her material is scarce and provides mostly connective tissue between the testimonials.

The key to making others like you quickly lies in establishing rapport with people. Based on the study of neuro-linguistic programming and interpersonal communication, this book offers simple techniques for getting a rapport going from attitudes and words to tone and body movements. If discovering how to connect with others is the secret to business and life success, as Boothman contends, then employing the strategies in this book shows how to become instantly likable and gain a leg up on the competition.

Living History by Hillary Rodham Clinton

Hillary Rodham Clinton | Scribner (April 2004) | English | # ISBN-10: 0743222253 # ISBN-13: 978-0743222259 | PDF | 1.55MB

Hillary Rodham Clinton is known to hundreds of millions of people around the world. Yet few beyond her close friends and family have ever heard her account of her extraordinary journey.

She writes with candor, humor and passion about her upbringing in suburban, middle-class America in the 1950s and her transformation from Goldwater Girl to student activist to controversial First Lady.

Living History is her revealing memoir of life through the White House years. It is also her chronicle of living history with Bill Clinton, a thirty-year adventure in love and politics that survives personal betrayal, relentless partisan investigations and constant public scrutiny.

Hillary Rodham Clinton came of age during a time of tumultuous social and political change in America. Like many women of her generation, she grew up with choices and opportunities unknown to her mother or grandmother. She charted her own course through unexplored terrain — responding to the changing times and her own internal compass — and became an emblem for some and a lightning rod for others.

Wife, mother, lawyer, advocate and international icon, she has lived through America’s great political wars, from Watergate to Whitewater.

The only First Lady to play a major role in shaping domestic legislation, Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled tirelessly around the country to champion health care, expand economic and educational opportunity and promote the needs of children and families, and she crisscrossed the globe on behalf of women’s rights, human rights and democracy.

She redefined the position of First Lady and helped save the presidency from an unconstitutional, politically motivated impeachment.

Intimate, powerful and inspiring, Living History captures the essence of one of the most remarkable women of our time and the challenging process by which she came to define herself and find her own voice — as a woman and as a formidable figure in American politics.

From Competitive Advantage to Corporate Strategy by Michael E. Porter (McKinsey Award Winner HBR Article)

From Competitive Advantage to Corporate Strategy by Michael E. Porter
English | PDF | 7MB

A study of the diversification records of 33 large U.S. companies from 1950 to 1986 shows that diversification–whether through acquisition, joint venture, or start-up–generally has not brought the competitive advantages or profitability expected.

Portfolio management, restructuring, transferring skills, and sharing activities are four concepts of corporate strategy that companies most commonly use.

Portfolio management no longer works very well in the United States because of its highly developed capital market.

Restructuring is merely a stopgap measure that will not build shareholder value over the long term because it usually produces an unwieldy conglomerate.

Companies have the best chance of being successful at diversification if they capitalize on the existing relationships between business units by having them transfer skills and share activities.

McKinsey Award Winner.

The Myths of Innovation by Scott Berkun

Scott Berkun | O'Reilly Media, Inc.; 1 edition (May 15, 2007) | English | ISBN-10: 0596527055 | ISBN-13: 978-0596527051 |PDF | 3.82MB

How do you know whether a hot technology will succeed or fail? Or where the next big idea will come from? The best answers come not from the popular myths we tell about innovation, but instead from time-tested truths that explain how we’ve made it this far. This book shows the way.

In The Myths of Innovation, bestselling author Scott Berkun takes a careful look at innovation history, including the software and Internet Age, to reveal how ideas truly become successful innovations-truths that people can apply to today’s challenges.

Using dozens of examples from the history of technology, business, and the arts, you’ll learn how to convert the knowledge you have into ideas that can change the world.

  • Why all innovation is a collaborative process
  • How innovation depends on persuasion
  • Why problems are more important than solutions
  • How the good innovation is the enemy of the great
  • Why the biggest challenge is knowing when it’s good enough

“For centuries before Google, MIT, and IDEO, modern hotbeds of innovation, we struggled to explain any kind of creation, from the universe itself to the multitudes of ideas around us. While we can make atomic bombs, and dry-clean silk ties, we still don’t have satisfying answers for simple questions like:

Where do songs come from? Are there an infinite variety of possible kinds of cheese? How did Shakespeare and Stephen King invent so much, while we’re satisfied watching sitcom reruns? Our popular answers have been unconvincing, enabling misleading, fantasy-laden myths to grow strong.” — Scott Berkun

How to Write A .com Business Plan: The Internet Entrepreneur's Guide to Everything You Need to Know About Business Plans and Financing Options

McGraw-Hill Trade; 1st edition (November 20, 2000) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 007135753X # ISBN-13: 978-0071357531 | PDF | 5.8MB

Just a little over five years ago, Amazon.com existed only in its creator's vision. Access to the Internet highway was often a bumpy ride, and the typical retail entrepreneur placed "location, location, location" high on the list of essentials for success.

Welcome to the brave new Webbed World! Amazon.com is viewed as one of the most stellar successes in the Internet sky. Surfing the Web has become just as easy and fasts—and in some cases, a heck of a lot more educational, entertaining, and exciting—as TV channel surfing. More and more entrepreneurs these days regard a great domain name as infinitely more valuable than the location of their business.

The Internet has become a force to be reckoned with in the business world—and woe unto you if that force is not with you. Consider the statistics. As reported in the marketing resource Web site eMarketer (emarketer.com), recent researchers have shown that "purchases on the Net are quickly catching up with shopping." One study indicated a more than 40 percent increase from 1998 to 1999 of PCs involved in e-commerce, amounting to 37 million PCs. In addition, eMarketer reported that "the number of computers used to make online purchases jumped 72 percent, which is double the increase of those who went online just to shop."

Academic Writing and Publishing will show academics (mainly in the social sciences) how to write and publish research articles. Its aim is to supply examples and brief discussions of recent work in all aspects of the area in short, sharp chapters. It should serve as a handbook for postgraduates and lecturers new to publishing. The book is written in a readable and lively personal style. The advice given is direct and based on up to date research that goes beyond that given in current textbooks. For example, the chapter on titles lists different kinds of titles and their purposes not discussed in other texts. The chapter on abstracts instructs the reader on writing structured abstracts from the start.

Writing Your Dissertation: How to Plan, Prepare and Present Successful Work by Derek Swetnam

Derek Swetnam | How to Books; 3 edition (January 2001) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 185703662X ISBN-13: 978-1857036626 | PDF | 3.4MB

Almost every higher education course in the country requires a thesis, dissertation or research project of some considerable length in full or partial fulfilment of its qualification. Such an undertaking often strikes terror into the average student, who is typically assumed to be able to work alone, to understand all the principles of research and to have high-level reading and writing skills. Where these have been acquired is not always apparent.
Some institutions offer excellent research methods courses and impeccable support; others, sadly, leave students to sink in a sea of panic which leads to high rates of non-completion or drop-out.

There are many top grade books on research methods but most assume that the researcher is a professional with unlimited time and resources. This book is based on the real experiences of students who do not match such a description but who need ideas for planning and producing a good piece of work without stress and total disruption of their personal life.

The basics are: asking a question, finding the answer and reporting the answer. It sounds easy: it can be easy and enjoyable but only for the organised and committed student.Only minor changes have been necessary to this edition.

Student feedback suggests that the book fulfils its purpose of providing signposts to the most direct route through what, for many, remains a daunting task. Mature students especially will appreciate the pragmatic approach which still makes no concessions to the quality and integrity of the final product. The temptation to expand this book into a 'great tome' of research methods has been resisted! There are quantities of advanced texts in every library and new styles of interactive study, internet usage and co-operative publishing have emerged. Despite this, hardly a week goes by without a report of some ludicrous, contradictory research into an aspect of diet or medicine carried out at enormous expense. This book remains committed to the practical fundamentals of useful inquiry undertaken with honesty and integrity by ordinary students.

My Life by Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton | Vintage (May 31, 2005) | English | # ISBN-10: 140003003X # ISBN-13: 978-1400030033 | PDF | 6.97MB

President Bill Clinton’s My Life is the strikingly candid portrait of a global leader who decided early in life to devote his intellectual and political gifts, and his extraordinary capacity for hard work, to serving the public. It shows us the progress of a remarkable American, who, through his own enormous energies and efforts, made the unlikely journey from Hope, Arkansas, to the White House—a journey fueled by an impassioned interest in the political process which manifested itself at every stage of his life: in college, working as an intern for Senator William Fulbright; at Oxford, becoming part of the Vietnam War protest movement; at Yale Law School, campaigning on the grassroots level for Democratic candidates; back in Arkansas, running for Congress, attorney general, and governor.

We see his career shaped by his resolute determination to improve the life of his fellow citizens, an unfaltering commitment to civil rights, and an exceptional understanding of the practicalities of political life. We come to understand the emotional pressures of his youth—born after his father’s death; caught in the dysfunctional relationship between his feisty, nurturing mother and his abusive stepfather, whom he never ceased to love and whose name he took; drawn to the brilliant, compelling Hillary Rodham, whom he was determined to marry; passionately devoted, from her infancy, to their daughter, Chelsea, and to the entire experience of fatherhood; slowly and painfully beginning to comprehend how his early denial of pain led him at times into damaging patterns of behavior.

President Clinton’s book is also the fullest, most concretely detailed, most nuanced account of a presidency ever written—encompassing not only the high points and crises but the way the presidency actually works: the day-to-day bombardment of problems, personalities, conflicts, setbacks, achievements. It is a testament to the positive impact on America and on the world of his work and his ideals. It is the gripping account of a president under concerted and unrelenting assault orchestrated by his enemies on the Far Right, and how he survived and prevailed. It is a treasury of moments caught alive, among them:

• The ten-year-old boy watching the national political conventions on his family’s new (and first) television set.

• The young candidate looking for votes in the Arkansas hills and the local seer who tells him, “Anybody who would campaign at a beer joint in Joiner at midnight on Saturday night deserves to carry one box. . . . You’ll win here. But it’ll be the only damn place you win in this county.” (He was right on both counts.)

• The roller-coaster ride of the 1992 campaign.

• The extraordinarily frank exchanges with Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole.

• The delicate manipulation needed to convince Rabin and Arafat to shake hands for the camera while keeping Arafat from kissing Rabin.

• The cost, both public and private, of the scandal that threatened the presidency.

Here is the life of a great national and international figure, revealed with all his talents and contradictions, told openly, directly, in his own completely recognizable voice. A unique book by a unique American.
