Courage: The Backbone of Leadership by Gus Lee, Diane Elliott-Lee

Gus Lee, Diane Elliott-Lee | Jossey-Bass | 2006-03-03 | ISBN: 0787981370 | 240 pages | PDF | 2.2 MB

[Gus Lee's webpage]

Real-world examples offer practical lessons for rooting out unethical practices and behaviors by:

* Assessing them for rightness and integrity
* Addressing moral failures
* Following through with dialogue and direct action

In this guide to doing the right thing, Lee presents a self-help approach to solving hard-edged problems. The key to effective leadership, he argues, is "principled conduct under pressure"—in short, courage. While courage is hardly the one-size-fits-all magic bullet that Lee envisions, much of his advice is valuable, particularly that dealing with communication, the thorniest management issue of all.

The book is built around extended anecdotes about executives facing tough personnel decisions and having to confront their habits of "avoidant communication," and Lee's reconstructed dialogue is engaging, realistic and instructive. He also offers periodic references to his own, genuinely inspiring transition from myopic, alienated wimp to successful executive, lawyer, executive coach, consultant and bestselling novelist (China Boy, etc.). Granted, this business book has many of the problems typical of the genre: the constant invoking of the book's title, whether or not relevant to the point being made; the regular introduction of acronymed concepts and clumsy coinages; the inspirational speeches and the occasional royal we phrasing ("We now see the difference between high, medium and low core values"). But any book that offers a road map to handling unpleasant workplace conversations is welcome—even if the choices in your everyday life don't require as much courage as in Lee's scenarios.

Affluenza: When Too Much is Never Enough by Clive Hamilton, Richard Denniss

Clive Hamilton, Richard Denniss | Allen & Unwin | 2006-04-01 | ISBN: 1741146712 | 240 pages | PDF | 1.5 MB

Anyone concerned about the level of their personal debt or frustrated by the rat race of aspiring to an affluent lifestyle will appreciate this critique of the effects of over-consumption. This analysis pulls no punches as it describes both the problem and what can be done to stop it. Analyzing the increasing rates of stress, depression, and obesity as possible effects of the consumption binge currently gripping the Western world, this report tracks how Australians overwork, the growing number of things thrown out, self-medicated drugs, and the real meaning of the word choice.

Affluenza tracks the growth and influence of conspicuous consumption in Australia, with some side-ways glances at other nations as well. (Most notably, the US and Britain) To paraphrase the authors - "Affluenza is the buying of stuff you don't need, with money you don't have, to impress people that you don't like". The book exposes the growth and impact of "the spending disease" from about the mid 1960s to the present day. It's a fascinating, and some times chilling read.
In this slim but data packed book, you learn how mass media and marketing are targeting your household and kids, with ad campaigns, marketing strategies, and product branding to engender a sense of need and emotional attachment to material goods. Fortunately, the authors also give some practical advice as to how an average person may "down-shift" and break the cycle of dependency. Often insightful, and never preachy, this is the kind of book you buy multiple copies of and hand out to your friends.

The Price of Everything: A Parable of Possibility and Prosperity by Russell Roberts

Russell Roberts | Princeton University Press | 2008-08-04 | ISBN: 0691135096 | 216 pages | PDF | 1 MB

Stanford University student and Cuban American tennis prodigy Ramon Fernandez is outraged when a nearby mega-store hikes its prices the night of an earthquake. He crosses paths with provost and economics professor Ruth Lieber when he plans a campus protest against the price-gouging retailer--which is also a major donor to the university. Ruth begins a dialogue with Ramon about prices, prosperity, and innovation and their role in our daily lives. Is Ruth trying to limit the damage from Ramon's protest? Or does she have something altogether different in mind?

As Ramon is thrust into the national spotlight by events beyond the Stanford campus, he learns there's more to price hikes than meets the eye, and he is forced to reconsider everything he thought he knew. What is the source of America's high standard of living? What drives entrepreneurs and innovation? What upholds the hidden order that allows us to choose our careers and pursue our passions with so little conflict? How does economic order emerge without anyone being in charge? Ruth gives Ramon and the reader a new appreciation for how our economy works and the wondrous role that the price of everything plays in everyday life.

The Price of Everything is a captivating story about economic growth and the unseen forces that create and sustain economic harmony all around us.

What Is Strategy? (HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition) by Michael E. Porter

"What Is Strategy?"
Michael E. Porter | Harvard Business Review (Feb 1, 2000) | English | PDF | 1.05MB

Today's dynamic markets and technologies have called into question the sustainability of competitive advantage. Under pressure to improve productivity, quality, and speed, managers have embraced tools such as TQM, benchmarking, and reengineering. Dramatic operational improvements have resulted, but rarely have these gains translated into sustainable profitability. And gradually, the tools have taken the place of strategy. As managers push to improve on all fronts, they move further away from viable competitive positions. Michael Porter argues that operational effectiveness, although necessary to superior performance, is not sufficient, because its techniques are easy to imitate. In contrast, the essence of strategy is choosing a unique and valuable position rooted in systems of activities that are much more difficult to match.

Addressing current questions about unity in diversity in a multicultural world of change, several Nobel Laureates of Literature have also focused on the difference between their identity as an author and their identity as a social being. This aspect of their creative selves makes them living in, as it were, two different and quite distinct worlds. There is a distance between them that is bridged only in the literary work, where these two worlds are intimately connected and presuppose one another.

V. S. NAIPAUL, living in England and born in Trinidad, discusses this topic in his Nobel Lecture of 2001, “Two Worlds”. His literary domain, encompassing the West Indies as well as India, Africa, America, and the Islamic countries of the East, reflects his own multicultural background, and in some of his most famous texts, the difficulty of settling down or finding a way “home” is the theme. An example is his novel The Enigma of Arrival.

Seven Surprises for New CEOs by Michael E. Porter, Jay W. Lorsch, Nitin Nohria

"Seven Surprises for New CEOs"
Michael E. Porter, Jay W. Lorsch, Nitin Nohria
Harvard Business Review (January 5, 2008) | English | PDF | 5.67MB

As a newly minted CEO, you may think you finally have the power to set strategy, the authority to make things happen, and full access to the finer points of your business. But if you expect the job to be as simple as that, you're in for an awakening. Even though you bear full responsibility for your company's well-being, you are a few steps removed from many of the factors that drive results. You have more power than anybody else in the corporation, but you need to use it with extreme caution. In their workshops for new CEOs, held at Harvard Business School in Boston, the authors have discovered that nothing--not even running a large business within the company--fully prepares a person to be the chief executive. The seven most common surprises are: You can't run the company. Giving orders is very costly. It is hard to know what is really going on. You are always sending a message. You are not the boss.
Pleasing shareholders is not the goal. You are still only human. These surprises carry some important and subtle lessons. First, you must learn to manage organizational context rather than focus on daily operations. Second, you must recognize that your position does not confer the right to lead, nor does it guarantee the loyalty of the organization. Finally, you must remember that you are subject to a host of limitations, even though others might treat you as omnipotent. How well and how quickly you understand, accept, and confront the seven surprises will have a lot to do with your success or failure as a CEO.

The Warren Buffett Portfolio: Mastering the Power of the Focus Investment Strategy by Robert G. Hagstrom

# Author: Robert G. Hagstrom # Paperback: 256 pages # Publisher: Wiley; 2Rev Ed edition (January 1, 1999) # Language: English # ISBN-10: 0471392642 # ISBN-13: 978-0471392644 # Format: PDF | 1.6MB

It's no secret that most mutual funds fail to beat the performance of the S&P 500. And if the pros can't beat the averages, it's not unreasonable to assume that most individual investors can't, either. Why? According to Robert Hagstrom, author of The Warren Buffett Portfolio, a big reason is the industry's emphasis on diversification. In the interest of minimizing risk, many investors have "become intellectually numb to its inevitable consequence: mediocre results." As a result, they wind up owning too many stocks and churn their portfolios unnecessarily (for example, the average mutual fund holds 100 stocks and turns over 80 percent of its portfolio annually). In The Warren Buffett Portfolio, Hagstrom shows how Buffett and others use the idea of focus investing to organize winning portfolios.

Unlike Hagstrom's first book, The Warren Buffett Way, which describes how the world's greatest investor selects individual companies, this book looks at the mathematics, the psychology, and the mental models necessary to build a successful portfolio.

The basic ideas: Pick no more than 10 to 15 companies with good track records and high probabilities of future success; plan to hang onto them for at least five years; and ignore predictions and the sometimes terrifying swings in market behavior. It's hard to argue with Hagstrom's approach, especially when he practices what he preaches. His fund, the Legg Mason Focus Trust, has 15 stocks, an annual turnover rate of 9 percent, and percentage annual returns in the mid-30s. For thoughtful investors and devotees of Warren Buffett, who are looking for more than the next hot stock tip, The Warren Buffett Portfolio is well-written guide. Recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

The Fifth Discipline by Peter M. Senge

# Author: Peter M. Senge
# Paperback: 424 pages
# Publisher: Doubleday Business; 1st edition (October 1, 1994)
# Language: English
# ISBN-10: 0385260954
# ISBN-13: 978-0385260954
# Format: PDF | 3.7MB

Peter Senge, founder of the Center for Organizational Learning at MIT's Sloan School of Management, experienced an epiphany while meditating one morning back in the fall of 1987. That was the day he first saw the possibilities of a "learning organization" that used "systems thinking" as the primary tenet of a revolutionary management philosophy. He advanced the concept into this primer, originally released in 1990, written for those interested in integrating his philosophy into their corporate culture.

The Fifth Discipline has turned many readers into true believers; it remains the ideal introduction to Senge's carefully integrated corporate framework, which is structured around "personal mastery," "mental models," "shared vision," and "team learning." Using ideas that originate in fields from science to spirituality, Senge explains why the learning organization matters, provides an unvarnished summary of his management principals, offers some basic tools for practicing it, and shows what it's like to operate under this system. The book's concepts remain stimulating and relevant as ever. --Howard Rothman

A director at MIT's Sloan School, Senge here proposes the "systems thinking" method to help a corporation to become a "learning organization," one that integrates at all personnel levels indifferently related company functions (sales, product design, etc.) to "expand the ability to produce." He describes requisite disciplines, of which systems-thinking is the fifth. Others include "personal mastery" of one's capacities and "team learning" through group discussion of individual objectives and problems. Employees and managers are also encouraged to examine together their often negative perceptions or "mental models" of company people and procedures. The text is esoteric and flavored with terms like "recontextualized rationality," but the book should help inventory-addled retailers whom the author cites as unaware of their customers' desire for quality. Many who have read the New York Times bestseller The Da Vinci Code have questions that arise from seven codes-expressed or implied-in Dan Brown's book. In Breaking the Da Vinci Code: Answers to the Questions Everyone's Asking, Darrell Bock, Ph.D., responds to the novelist's claims using central ancient texts and answers the following questions:

Who was Mary Magdalene?
Was Jesus Married?
Would Jesus Being Single be Un-Jewish?
Do the So-Called Secret Gnostic Gospels Help Us Understand Jesus?
What Is the Remaining Relevance of The Da Vinci Code?

Darrell Bock's research uncovers the origins of these codes by focusing on the 325 years immediately following the birth of Christ, for the claims of The Da Vinci Code rise or fall on the basis of things emerging from this period. Breaking the Da Vinci Code, now available in trade paper, distinguishes fictitious entertainment from historical elements of the Christian faith. For by seeing these differences, one can break the Da Vinci code.

Vicodin Pain Killer Addiction

Vicodin Pain Killer Addiction
English | PDF | 2 Pages

Vicodin is a trademarked brand of narcotic analgesics (painkillers) containing hydrocodone and paracetamol (acetaminophen or, more-completely, para-acetylaminophenol). It is usually found in tablet form with either the names "Vicodin", "Vicodin ES", or "Vicodin HP" imprinted on one side. Analgesics with the same chemical composition and a similar physical appearance are found under many other trade names, including Anexsia, Anolor DH5, Bancap HC, Dolacet, Hydro, Lorcet, Lortab, Norco, T-Gesic, and Vadunk. The hydrocodone/paracetamol drug formula is also available under generic brands. The paracetamol in the formula increases the effects of the hydrocodone in relieving pain but also discourages drug abuse since the doses needed for recreation would have toxic amounts of paracetamol. Oral hydrocodone is considered 1.5 times as potent as oral morphine, though the equianalgesic dose varies between patients.

# ISBN-13: 978-0812929980
# Format: PDF | 2 Pages summary

In this age of do-it-yourself health care (heck, if the doctor only sees you for 10 minutes each visit, what other options are there?), Change Your Brain, Change Your Life fits in perfectly. Filled with "brain prescriptions" (among them cognitive exercises and nutritional advice) that are geared toward readers who've experienced anxiety, depression, impulsiveness, excessive anger or worry, and obsessive behavior, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life milks the mind-body connection for all it's worth.

Written by a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has also authored a book on attention deficit disorder, Change Your Brain contains dozens of brain scans of patients with various neurological problems, from caffeine, nicotine, and heroin addiction to manic-depression to epilepsy. These scans, often showing large gaps in neurological activity or areas of extreme overactivity, are downright frightening to look at, and Dr. Amen should know better than to resort to such scare tactics. But he should also be commended for advocating natural remedies, including deep breathing, guided imagery, meditation, self-hypnosis, and biofeedback for treating disorders that are so frequently dealt with by prescription only.

Digital Video for Dummies by Keith Underdahl

Keith Underdahl | Wiley Publishing, Inc. 3rd Edition | English language | ISBN: 0764541145 | PDF | 411 pages | 11.6 Mb

If marketing folks want to breathe new life into an existing technology, the method du jour is to tack "digital" onto the name. Today we have digital cable, digital cell phones, digital fuel injection, and now, digital video. But unlike some other technologies that have recently earned the digital prefix, digital video isn’t just a minor improvement over the old way of doing things. Digital video is a revolution that is changing the way we think about and use moving pictures.

Regular folks have had the capability to record their own video for many years now. Affordable film movie cameras have been available since the 1950s, and video cameras that record directly onto videotape have been with us for over two decades. But after you recorded some video or film with one of these old cameras, you couldn’t do much else with it. You could show your movies to friends and family in raw, unedited form, but there was no confusing your rough home movie with a professional Hollywood production.

Digital camcorders provide a slight quality improvement over older camcorders, but the real advantage of digital video is that you can now easily edit your video on a computer. I don’t have to tell you how far computer technology has progressed over the last few years, and you know that modern Macs and PCs can now do some pretty amazing things. In a matter of seconds, you can import video from your digital camcorder into your computer, cut out the scenes you don’t want, add some special effects, and then instantly send your movies to friends over the Internet - or burn them to a DVD. The capability to easily edit your own movies adds a whole new level of creativity that was - just five years ago - the exclusive realm of broadcast and movie professionals.

In a culture so accustomed to and influenced by video images, it’s actually kind of surprising that personal moviemaking hasn’t burgeoned sooner. Video is the art of our time, and now - at last - you have the power to use this art for your own expression. What will you draw on your digital-video canvas?

Why This Book?
Digital video is a big, highly technical subject, so you need a guide to help you understand and use this technology. But you don’t need a big book that is so highly technical that it just gathers dust on your bookshelf. You need easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions for the most important tasks, and you need tips and tricks to make your movies more successful. You need Digital Video For Dummies, Third Edition.

Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Biography (Greenwood Biographies) by Roger Bruns

Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Biography (Greenwood Biographies)
Roger Bruns | Greenwood Press | 2006-06-30 | ISBN: 0313336865 | 184 pages | PDF | 1.2 MB

There has been recent controversy in the African American community about youth and their lack of appreciation for the gains of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. This stellar biography is a superb introduction to the foremost leader of the civil rights movement. The story and historical context will be eye-opening for students and a good refresher for others who are too young to have remembered the events. In a gripping narrative style, the biography traces the young Martin, the son and grandson of formidable preachers, to his calling as a minister too, but one who would take on the entrenched racism of the South, and North, through a nonviolent movement that changed the course of American history. King's story is compelling, starting from his early nurtured family life in an insular community of blacks in Atlanta. His education at Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Boston University and courtship of Coretta Scott lead into the early days of the civil rights movement and King's leadership role in the major marches, demonstrations, boycotts, and sit-ins that took place, mainly in the South.
Critical insight into the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations is given as King negotiates with the presidents for equal rights for blacks. The violent reactions against and hatred of many whites for those seeking racial justice are still shocking today. Against the backdrop of beatings, killings, bombings, threats, and imprisoning, King is portrayed as driven to lift up all Americans, even if it meant martyrdom.

100 Winning Resumes For $100000 Jobs, Resumes for the 50 Job Hunter with Sample Cover Letters ...

I started a job hunt recently, and hadn't written a resume in the last 6 years or so. I had a good idea of how I wanted to present and market myself, but I didn't have all of the fine details filled in.

These books are extensive, but well labeled. Start reading at the beginning, and every subject points you to the chapter with more information on that subject. Kind of like hyperlinks. That way you can look through at the major headings and pick and choose what you don't already know.

I took a prioritized approach, because I was in a little bit of a hurry. I took the resume section, picked a format based on my experience, then wrote a draft. From there, I went back and picked through the writing sections to make sure that I was on the right track. If you've read the examples, and the "before and after" sections, you'll probably have a good idea already what the big picture is. From then I went on to the section on cover letters and online job searching.

There are sections on virtually every subject of resume and cover letter writing, gathering references, job searching and interview preparation. Everything that you really need to get started, or just touch up on what you already know is well organized and labeled so that you can use it immediately. It's just what I was looking for, so that I wouldn't have to waste time reading the "full story" on each subject.

After following the advice in this book and sending out about 20 copies of my resume online, I had about 10 replies in the first week, and about 6 requests for interviews already.

Book buyers and Buffett admirers alike, have praised The Real Warren Buffett for its compelling insights into how
the second richest man in America achieved his astounding success.

At the death of writing this book, and before settling on its final version, I handed the manuscript to a good friend of mine for one last sanity check. David Crowther, the man with the quickest brain I know, duly digested the work and downloaded his observations, one of which was the realization: “My God, Jim. Buffett just knows it all.”

And that’s precisely why I wrote this book. In my career as a fund manager and equity strategist, the more I read of the theory of investment and the more I progressed to learn about the challenges facing managements in the creation of value in organizational theory, complexity theory, behavioral psychology, whatever—the more Buffett’s insights into these disciplines leapt out at me from his letters to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway.

Redefining Competition in Health Care by Michael E. Porter and Elizabeth Olmsted Teisberg

"Redefining Competition in Health Care"
Michael E. Porter and Elizabeth Olmsted Teisberg
Harvard Business Review (January 5, 2008) | English | PDF | 6.49MB

The U.S. health care system is in bad shape. Medical services are restricted or rationed, many patients receive poor care, and high rates of preventable medical error persist. There are wide and inexplicable differences in costs and quality among providers and across geographic areas. In well-functioning, competitive markets, such outcomes would be inconceivable. In health care, these results are intolerable. Competition in health care needs to change, say the authors. It currently operates at the wrong level. Payers, health plans, providers, physicians, and others in the system wrangle over the wrong things, in the wrong locations, and at the wrong times. System participants divide value instead of creating it. (And in some instances, they destroy it.) They shift costs onto one another, restrict access to care, stifle innovation, and hoard information--all without truly benefiting patients. This form of zero-sum competition must be replaced by competition at the level of preventing, diagnosing, and treating individual conditions and diseases. Among the authors' well-researched recommendations for reform: Standardized information about individual diseases and treatments should be collected and disseminated widely so patients can make informed choices about their care. Payers, providers, and health plans should establish transparent billing and pricing mechanisms to reduce cost shifting, confusion, pricing discrimination, and other inefficiencies in the system. And health care providers should be experts in certain conditions and treatments rather than try to be all things to all people. U.S. employers can also play a big role in reform by changing how they manage their health benefits.

# ISBN-13: 978-0470014899
# Format: PDF | 1.9MB

The world of business has changed significantly in recent years. Why? Because business has increasingly made more use of the probability, statistical methods and analytic techniques in areas where they previously were not used at all.

You may feel rather uncomfortable about all of this. Perhaps you gave up mathematics, wondering what the relevance of the subject really was. Others may just need to be reminded what some of the techniques actually mean.

Mathematics of Banking takes the type of techniques that you may come across in the developing world of banking, including operational risk, and explains when the techniques could be used and what if any limitations there are to these techniques.

The book offers an intermediate guide to the various techniques used in the industry, and a consideration of how each one should be approached. Written in a practical style, it will enable readers to quickly appreciate the purpose of the techniques and, through illustrations, see how they can be applied in practice. Coverage is extensive and includes techniques such as VaR analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, extreme value theory, variance and many other important models.

Seven Surprises for New CEOs by Michael E. Porter

"Seven Surprises for New CEOs"
Michael E. Porter | Harvard Business Review | PDF | 5.67MB

The Seven Surprises for New CEOs were described first in the HBR of October 2004 in an article by Michael Porter, Jay Lorsch and Nitin Nohria on CEO leadership.

As a newly minted CEO, one may think to finally have the power to set strategy, the authority to make things happen, and full access to the finer points of your business. But if one expects the job to be as simple as that, you’re in for an awakening. Even though you bear full responsibility for your company’s well-being, you are a few steps removed from many of the factors that drive results. You have more power than anybody else in the corporation, but you need to use it with extreme caution.

Porter ea have discovered that nothing—not even running a large business within the company—fully prepares a person to be the chief executive. The following seven surprises are most common for new CEOs:
1. You can’t run the company (The sheer volume and intensity of external demands take many by surprise. Almost every new CEO struggles to manage the time drain of attending to shareholders, analysts, board members, industry groups, politicians, and other constituencies)
2. Giving orders is very costly (No proposal should reach the CEO for final approval unless he can ratify it with enthusiasm. Before then, everyone involved with the matter should have raised and resolved any potential deal breakers, bringing the CEO into the discussion only at strategically significant moments to obtain feedback and support)
3. It is hard to know what is really going on (Certainly, CEOs are flooded with information, but reliable information is surprisingly scarce. All information coming to the top is filtered, sometimes with good intentions, sometimes with not such good intentions)
4. You are always sending a message (A CEOs words and deeds, however small or off-the-cuff, are instantly spread and amplified, scrutinized, interpreted and sometimes drastically misinterpreted)
5. You are not the boss (Although the CEO may sit at the top of the management hierarchy, he still reports to the board of directors. At the end of the day, the board—not the CEO—is in charge)
6. Pleasing shareholders is not the goal (CEOs must recognize that, ultimately, it is only long-term value creation that matters, not today’s growth expectations or even the stock price)
7. You are still only human (CEO Should recognize he needs connections to the world outside his organization, at home and in the community, to avoid being consumed by his corporate live)

These seven surprises for new CEOs carry some important lessons:
* First, as a new CEO you must learn to manage organizational context rather than focus on daily operations.
* Second, you must recognize that your position does not confer the right to lead, nor does it guarantee the loyalty of the organization.
* Finally, you must remember that you are subject to a host of limitations, even though others might treat you as omnipotent.

Never Bet the Farm: How Entrepreneurs Take Risks, Make Decisionsand How You Can, Too by Anthony Iaquinto, Stephen, Jr. Spinelli

Anthony Iaquinto, Stephen, Jr. Spinelli | Jossey-Bass | 2006-03-17 | ISBN: 0787983667 | 224 pages | PDF | 1.6 MB

In Never Bet the Farm two leading entrepreneurs, Anthony Iaquinto and Stephen Spinelli, turn much of the so-called expert advice for entrepreneurs on its head. They show that by preparing for setbacks and using a framework that can help reduce risks and simplify decision making, entrepreneurs can increase their probability for success. They refute the idea that there is an ideal entrepreneurial “type,” and show that luck can be as important as a business plan in many enterprises. Above all, the authors emphasize that entrepreneurship is a career, not a one-time event, and winners are those who can keep themselves in the game. Never Bet the Farm is an easy-to-understand and attractive tool for anyone who has a business idea, but who might be wary of the risks implied in starting their own business.

# Number Of Pages: 246
# ISBN-10: 0471655848
# ISBN-13: 9780471655848

# Format:PDF | 2.1MB

"Trading is notoriously tough. But Altucher's new book adds a noteworthy addition to the library on Warren Buffett. He shows a lot of Buffett that isn't readily available in the existing common literature. Definitely required reading for any serious Buffett buff."
-Kenneth L. Fisher, Forbes' "Portfolio Strategy" Columnist Founder and CEO, Fisher Investments

"Finally, someone blows apart the myth that Warren Buffett is a buy-and-hold investor. Altucher has given us an insightful and well-written commentary on how Buffett has amassed his track record, and what we can do to emulate him. He details the trade-by-trade examples. This is a must read for anyone wanting to learn about how the Master Investor works."
-John Mauldin, author, Bull's Eye Investing editor of Thoughts from the Frontline (www.2000wave.com)

While Warren Buffett is considered the "world's greatest value investor," there's another side to Buffett that is rarely talked about. Although Buffett has gained recognition for his value investing approach to the markets, the fact is that nobody-over the past fifty years-has traded and invested with a more diverse group of strategies than Buffett.

Trade Like Warren Buffett challenges the current coverage of this great investor by including details of all of Buffett's investing and trading methods, including mean reversion, commodities, bonds, arbitrage, market timing, funds, as well as Graham-Dodd. To augment the discussion of each strategy, Trade Like Warren Buffett also includes interviews with leading financial professionals, who reveal in detail how they've successfully used the same techniques.

There is no one way to sum up Warren Buffett's investment style. But if you're interested in boosting the performance of your portfolio, Trade Like Warren Buffett can show you how.

Alan Greenspan: The Oracle Behind The Curtain by E. Ray Canterbery

E. Ray Canterbery | World Scientific Publishing Company | 2006-02-16 | ISBN: 9812566066 | 193 pages | PDF | 2.3 MB

This thought-provoking new title, by the highly acclaimed author of Wall Street Capitalism and A Brief History of Economics, provides a much-needed counterbalance to the mythical distortions of Alan Greenspan. Canterbery exposes Greenspan’s fundamentalist market ideology as overwhelming rationality in the making of economic policy. He depicts a Fed selfishly guarding its political independence, even as Greenspan has his way in virtually every major economic and social policy affecting the global economy since the Ford Administration.

This book reveals the hidden nodes of power that give the Fed vast authority over the global economy. It also explains why it is so important not only to understand those powers, but also to appreciate why they are resistant to moderation.

How We Got Here: A Slightly Irreverent History of Technology and Markets by Andy Kessler

Andy Kessler | Collins | 2005-06-01 | ISBN: 0060840978 | 272 pages | PDF | 1.1 MB

Best-selling author Andy Kessler ties up the loose ends from his provocative book, Running Money, with this history of breakthrough technology and the markets that funded them.

Expanding on themes first raised in his tour de force, Running Money, Andy Kessler unpacks the entire history of Silicon Valley and Wall Street, from the Industrial Revolution to computers, communications, money, gold and stock markets. These stories cut (by an unscrupulous editor) from the original manuscript were intended as a primer on the ways in which new technologies develop from unprofitable curiosities to essential investments. Indeed, How We Got Here is the book Kessler wishes someone had handed him on his first day as a freshman engineering student at Cornell or on the day he started on Wall Street. This book connects the dots through history to how we got to where we are today.

Shrink Yourself: Break Free from Emotional Eating Forever by Roger Gould

Roger Gould |Wiley | 2007-04-27 | ISBN: 0470044853 | 288 pages | PDF | 1.1 MB

Emotional eating is by far the most common cause of weight gain. As you'll learn in Shrink Yourself, all the diets, exercise regimens, and surgical procedures in the world will not free you from this vicious cycle. Why? Because they don't address your reasons for overeating.

Shrink Yourself, a supportive, unique, and ground-breaking guide written by a world-renowned therapist who has helped thousands of people lose weight and keep it off, gets to the heart of the problem. Shrink Yourself gives you the equivalent of eight expensive sessions with the best weight-loss therapist in the world for the price of a single book.

Yo-yo dieting is an endless cycle. You diet and lose weight. Then you eat "comfort food" - that piece of cake, huge bowl of ice cream, or enormous bag of potato chips you devour to smother your feelings of fear, anxiety, stress, anger, boredom, loneliness, frustration, or so many other feelings. The comfort doesn't last long. Soon you feel guilty for breaking your diet, so you displace the guilt with another helping. Before long, you're unpacking your fat clothes again and berating yourself for your lack of willpower. Then, warily, you contemplate the next diet.

With Shrink Yourself, renowned psychiatrist and emotional eating expert Dr. Roger Gould offers the first step-by-step analysis of the connection between eating and emotion. Dr. Gould explains why the connection is so powerful and shows you how to break the emotional eating cycle, shed all your excess pounds, and keep them off for good. Based on Dr. Gould's unique method and his work involving more than twenty thousand people, this revolutionary eight-session program reveals that your uncontrollable hunger is connected to feelings of powerlessness in your life. You'll discover the five layers of powerlessness and you'll learn how to recognize and cope with each of them by:

Conquering the feeling phobia
Waking up from the food trance
Challenging your self-doubts
Defeating your defeatism
Creating real safety
Dealing positively with anger
And more

Food may be a relatively inexpensive "over-the-counter tranquilizer," but its side effects can be devastating. So before you rush to try the next fad diet or start binge eating after a stressful day, ask yourself, "Is this the way I want to live?" Then read Shrink Yourself and learn how to take control of your emotions to slim down permanently? without ever counting calories again. You can truly shrink yourself.

A Course in Microeconomic Theory by David M. Kreps

David M. Kreps | Princeton University Press | 1990-02-21 | ISBN: 0691042640 | 863 pages | Djvu | 10.7 MB

David M. Kreps has developed a text in microeconomics that is both challenging and "user-friendly." The work is designed for the first-year graduate microeconomic theory course and is accessible to advanced undergraduates as well. Placing unusual emphasis on modern noncooperative game theory, it provides the student and instructor with a unified treatment of modern microeconomic theory--one that stresses the behavior of the individual actor (consumer or firm) in various institutional settings. The author has taken special pains to explore the fundamental assumptions of the theories and techniques studied, pointing out both strengths and weaknesses.

The book begins with an exposition of the standard models of choice and the market, with extra attention paid to choice under uncertainty and dynamic choice.
General and partial equilibrium approaches are blended, so that the student sees these approaches as points along a continuum. The work then turns to more modern developments. Readers are introduced to noncooperative game theory and shown how to model games and determine solution concepts. Models with incomplete information, the folk theorem and reputation, and bilateral bargaining are covered in depth. Information economics is explored next. A closing discussion concerns firms as organizations and gives readers a taste of transaction-cost economics.

Law of Attraction: The Science of Attracting More of What You Want and Less of What You Don't by Michael J. Losier

Michael J. Losier | Wellness Central | 2007-06-11 | ISBN: 0446199745 | 142 pages | PDF | 1.5 MB

This neuro-linguistic programming expert is only moderately cocky about the control he says we can have when we focus on what we want instead of what we dont. He says too many people get stuck in negative thinking, punish themselves with low expectations, and surround themselves with losers instead of achievers. Our predominant vibe, positive or negative, is how the universe will respond to us. The words we choose give energy to this vibration, one way or the other. Hugh Gallaghers alluring interpretation gives this material weight. His restrained performance adds vocal emphasis exactly where its needed and conveys the core meaning with the perfect amount of gravitas. Printable worksheets allow listeners to create more effective word statements for their problems.

The 2R Manager: When to Relate, When to Require, and How to Do Both Effectively by Peter E. Friedes

Peter E. Friedes | Jossey-Bass | 2002-07-15 | ISBN: 078795893X | 218 pages | PDF | 1 MB

The 2R Manager will make you a better manager---immediately. It offers specific advice tailored to each individual's current management style. You will take some self-surveys, see the results, and learn the impact you now have on those you manage. Youll learn what changes you must make and how to make them.

Managers have naturally either a Relating or a Requiring style. Those who naturally require are weaker at relating---sometimes much weaker---and vice versa. The best managers possess the ability to do both well and know when to choose one over the other. Most managers miss opportunities. Some try to be their employee's friend when they need to be setting priorities and deadlines. Others, thinking they have the answers, miss getting new ideas and destroy their employees motivation. Having the ability to relate and require is fundamental for effective managing.

Whether you want to improve how you now manage people or create a management-training alternative that can help reduce time and costs, you will find what you're looking for in The 2R Manager.

The Myth of the Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies by Bryan Caplan

Bryan Caplan | Princeton University Press | 2007-04-16 | ISBN: 0691129428 | 280 pages | PDF | 2.4 MB

The greatest obstacle to sound economic policy is not entrenched special interests or rampant lobbying, but the popular misconceptions, irrational beliefs, and personal biases held by ordinary voters. This is economist Bryan Caplan's sobering assessment in this provocative and eye-opening book. Caplan argues that voters continually elect politicians who either share their biases or else pretend to, resulting in bad policies winning again and again by popular demand.

Boldly calling into question our most basic assumptions about American politics, Caplan contends that democracy fails precisely because it does what voters want. Through an analysis of Americans' voting behavior and opinions on a range of economic issues, he makes the convincing case that noneconomists suffer from four prevailing biases: they underestimate the wisdom of the market mechanism, distrust foreigners, undervalue the benefits of conserving labor, and pessimistically believe the economy is going from bad to worse. Caplan lays out several bold ways to make democratic government work better--for example, urging economic educators to focus on correcting popular misconceptions and recommending that democracies do less and let markets take up the slack.

The Myth of the Rational Voter takes an unflinching look at how people who vote under the influence of false beliefs ultimately end up with government that delivers lousy results. With the upcoming presidential election season drawing nearer, this thought-provoking book is sure to spark a long-overdue reappraisal of our elective system.

The 80/20 Principle: The Secret to Success by Achieving More with Less by Richard Koch

Richard Koch | Currency | 1999-10-19 | ISBN: 0385491743 | 288 pages | PDF | 1.1 MB

In 1897, Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, in his study of the patterns of wealth and income, observed that the distribution of wealth was predictably unbalanced. He first discovered this pattern in 19th-century England and found it to be the same for every country and time period he studied. Over the years, Pareto's observation has become known as the 80/20 principle.

Now in 1998, Richard Koch takes a fresh look at the 80/20 principle and finds that the basic imbalance observed by Pareto 100 years ago can be found in almost every aspect of modern life. Whether you're investing in stocks, analyzing company sales, or looking at the performance of a Web site, you'll find that it's usually 20 percent that produces 80 percent of the total result. This means 80 percent of what you do may not count for much. Koch helps you to identify that 20 percent and shows you how you can get more out of your business, and life, for less.

The Competitive Advantage of Corporate Philanthropy by Michael E. Porter and Mark R. Kramer

"The Competitive Advantage of Corporate Philanthropy"
Michael E. Porter and Mark R. Kramer
Harvard Business Review, December 2002 | English | PDF | 3.17MB

When it comes to philanthropy, executives increasingly see themselves as caught between critics demanding ever higher levels of "corporate social responsibility" and investors applying pressure to maximize short-term profits. Increasingly, philanthropy is used as a form of public relations or advertising, promoting a company's image through high-profile sponsorships. But there is a more truly strategic way to think about philanthropy. Corporations can use their charitable efforts to improve their competitive context--the quality of the business environment in the locations where they operate. Using philanthropy to enhance competitive context aligns social and economic goals and improves a company's long-term business prospects. Addressing context enables a company not only to give money but also leverage its capabilities and relationships in support of charitable causes. Taking this new direction requires fundamental changes in the way companies approach their contribution programs. Adopting a context-focused approach requires a far more disciplined approach than is prevalent today. But it can make a company's philanthropic activities far more effective.

Rich Dad's Guide to Investing: What the Rich Invest in That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not! by Robert T. Kiyosaki, Sharon L. Lechter

Robert T. Kiyosaki, Sharon L. Lechter | Time Warner Books (June 2000) | English | 403 Pages | ISBN-10: 0446677469 # ISBN-13: 978-0446677462 | PDF | 2.3MB

The rich are different from the rest of us, if for no other reason than U.S. tax and securities laws allow them to invest in ways that keep us from catching up to them. That's why 90 percent of all corporate shares of stock are owned by 10 percent of the people. Kiyosaki believes it's possible for anyone to move up into that 10 percent, but it takes a different view of investing than most people have: it takes a plan to be a successful investor. And a plan is more than simply buying and selling, or collecting "assets" that bring in no cash and are thus more akin to liabilities. The way most people invest, "they might as well be pushing a wheelbarrow in a circle," he writes.

A plan is "mechanical, automatic, and boring," a formula for success that has worked historically for most of those who've used it. Kiyosaki's "rich dad" (actually, the father of his best friend) tells him the simplest analogy is the game Monopoly: buy four green houses, trade them for one red hotel, and repeat until you become rich. The overall message of Rich Dad's Guide to Investing is that this is an abundant world, full of opportunity for the sophisticated investor. However, it sometimes takes a while to find this point. Much of the book is told in dialogues between young Kiyosaki and his rich dad, and these conversations can ramble.

There are rewards for the careful reader--for example, in the middle of a section on the basic rules of investing, Kiyosaki's rich dad compares investor education to toilet training: difficult at first but eventually automatic. But getting to these inspired metaphors means wading through a lot of repetitive dialogue. It's a bit ironic that someone who advocates investor discipline should show so little as a writer. But by the end of the book, even the rambling starts to make sense. By the hundredth time you read that the rich don't work for money, and that you don't need money to make money, both concepts start to make sense. It still looks difficult to apply these ideas, but Rich Dad's Guide to Investing certainly makes the case that they'll work for anyone bold and smart enough to practice them.

Applied Macroeconometrics by Carlo A. Favero

Carlo A. Favero | Oxford University Press, USA (March 22, 2001) | English | 296 Pages | ISBN-10: 0198296851 # ISBN-13: 978-0198296850 | PDF | 2MB

Until the 1970s, there was a consensus in applied macroeconometrics, both regarding the theoretical foundation and the empirical specification of macroeconometric modelling, commonly known as the Cowles Commission approach. This is no longer the case: the Cowles Commission approach broke down in the 1970s, replaced by three prominent competing methods of empirical research: the LSE (London School of Economics) approach, the VAR approach, and the intertemporal optimization/Real Business Cycle approach. This book discusses and illustrates the empirical research strategy of these three alternative approaches by interpreting them as different proposals to solve problems observed in the Cowles Commission approach.

Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, 1st Marquis of Púbol (May 11, 1904 – January 23, 1989), was a Spanish surrealist painter born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. Dalí was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. His painterly skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters. His best known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in 1931. Salvador Dalí's artistic repertoire also included film, sculpture, and photography. He collaborated with Walt Disney on the Academy Award-nominated short cartoon Destino, which was released posthumously in 2003. He also collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock on Hitchcock's film Spellbound.

Dalí insisted on his "Arab lineage", claiming that his ancestors were descended from the Moors who occupied Southern Spain for nearly 800 years (711-1492), and attributed to these origins, "my love of everything that is gilded and excessive, my passion for luxury and my love of oriental clothes."

Widely considered to be greatly imaginative, Dalí had an affinity for doing unusual things to draw attention to himself. This sometimes irked those who loved his art as much as it annoyed his critics, since his eccentric manner sometimes drew more public attention than his artwork. The purposefully-sought notoriety led to broad public recognition and many purchases of his works by people from all walks of life.

The Secret History of the American Empire: Economic Hit Men, Jackals, and the Truth about Global Corruption by John Perkins

John Perkins | Dutton Adult (June 5, 2007) | Language: English | 384 Pages | ISBN-10: 052595015X # ISBN-13: 978-0525950158 | PDF | 1.03MB

Having made a splash with Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, Perkins offers similarly entertaining but disturbing accounts of the American government wreaking havoc around the world in support of American business. In Perkins's view, American presidents willingly comply with their CEO masters, distributing foreign aid to corrupt Third World leaders who keep a share and return the rest to U.S. business for major projects, leaving their nations poor and massively in debt, and requiring more loans and slavish obedience to U.S. policy. If any leader objects, the CIA destabilizes his government, by assassination if necessary. Gathering evidence is not Perkins's strong suit. Typically, a shadowy figure pulls him aside, insists on anonymity, then reveals all. Critics will rightfully accuse Perkins of dreadful journalism and a taste for conspiracy theories. Yet economists admit that loans and "expert advice" to poor nations are often harmful. Few deny that America has ruthlessly undermined uncooperative governments and supported dictators including Saddam Hussein. Perkins's assertions that the U.S. assassinated Ecuador's reformist president and connived at genocide in Timor and Sudan are not absurd, merely unproven. This book's greatest value may be to encourage a competent journalist to cover the same ground.

Are you looking for time-tested trading techniques that professional stock index and futures traders use?

Futures and options markets can be profitable arenas for both novice and experienced traders. But to come out on top, you must have a solid understanding of the markets, the technical tools used to trade them, and yourself.

After twenty-five years as abroker, trader, and educator in the futures and options field, John Person has associated with trading legends and manysuccessful traders and witnessed firsthand their strategies for success. Out of these real-time experiences, he shares the valuable insights you will find in A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics. Novice and experienced alike will gain a better understanding of the mechanics of the markets and methodologies that work.

Person demonstrates multiple trading methodologies using pivot point analysis and shows you how you can implement these key calculations with other methods and indicators. To understand this approach, you don’t have to abandon your knowledge of traditional technical analysis techniques. All you have to do is be open to integrating the theories to help you confirm, validate, and identify entry and exit points when trading.

By learning how to better integrate elements of market analysis such as time and price, you’ll be ready to trade with confidence and achieve success. The proven methodologies that are discussed from the technical side include:

  • Pivot points–a leading price indicator that is based on price points using different time frames
  • Cycle analysis–which deals with predicting market turning points based on time
  • Candle chart patterns–which are based on price relationships between the open, high, low, and close including past chart points such as old highs or lows
  • Fibonacci ratio corrections and extension studies–which are based on past price points
  • Mental thought processes–the last and maybe the most important aspect of trading, which will help you evaluate your psychological makeup and overcomerough spots to stay focused when trading
If you are to trade successfully, you need to understand that it requires hard work, discipline, and, above all, that you remain focused with the use of methodologies that pinpoint opportunities and help you take control of your emotions. A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics will go a long way toward accomplishing these goals.

The Complete TurtleTrader: The Legend, the Lessons, the Results by Michael W. Covel

Michael W. Covel | Collins (October 9, 2007) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 0061241709 # ISBN-13: 978-0061241703 | PDF | 2.68MB

Covel (Trend Following) revisits a famous financial trading experiment conducted by Wall Street trader Richard Dennis and extracts its lessons with mixed results. Dennis, who quickly learned how to trade after starting as a runner at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1966 at age 17, had made a reported $200 million by 1983. To settle an argument with fellow trader William Eckhardt about whether trading ability was innate or could be taught, he put an ad in the Wall Street Journal offering to teach candidates how to trade in two weeks, and then backed them with his own money. Of the thousands of people who who applied, 23 turtles were accepted. Their trading made $100 million for Dennis, leading some to become highly successful traders in their own right. Having tracked down most of the people involved, Covel describes the turtle training, including rules for entering and exiting trades as well as Dennis and Eckhardt's personal lessons, and speculates on why some turtles succeeded more than others. However, there are too many characters with competing interests, and many missing facts. Covel's own strong views can also get more emphasis than the voices of the principals. Still, the book is a useful training manual distilling the lessons of a fascinating experiment.
